BC on Autism 28: Bipolar Autism Speaks

Autism Speaks is trying to be the voice in the autism community but I want to focus on two of its members: Kevin Barry and Dr. Andrew Shih. Kevin Barry is a consultant and a lawyer who is a mercury enthusiast whereas Dr. Shih seems to be a straight-up scientist. Guess which one has a real problem with Roy Grinker's latest book that challenges the notion that there's an autism epidemic? I'll give you a hint: the other one bodyslams Montel Williams on his own pathetic show.

Running time is ~ 7 minutes. Enjoy.

It appears that Kevin Barry of Autism Speaks is having some fun with rallying the troops to disparage Roy Grinker's new book. What a loser. Dr. Grinker really stepped into a pit of vipers. The silent majority is behind you, Dr. Grinker.

Looks like you can take the zealot out of GR but you can't take the GR out of the zealot.

Yeah. You really have to know your stuff and be confident to go toe-to-toe with someone who has an obvious (ratings) agenda like Montel. I mean, Montel didn't even try to hide it. Shih beat him down with calm facts. Good stuff.

I'm sure Autism Speaks will attract some great scientists knowing that the attack dogs are waiting in the wings to bite their ankles if they question dogma.

It's always nice to have an attorney in a position to interpret science. As I recall KB tried to demonstrate his grasp of research over on Tara's blog. Anyone have that link?

1. The fact that Montel Williams has a television show makes me want to weep for America. I doubt that man could follow the directions on a can of soup.

2. Confronting thimerosal activists is a lose-lose for proponents of real science. If they do, they both lend the whackjobs credibility by appearing with them, and are handicapped by being limited to saying what is supportable by the facts, whereas the activists make up whatever sounds good and ire-inspiring at the moment. If science supporters decline to engage, they're accused of not having a case to make.

3. If this is as stealthy as Kevin Barry can be, it's no surprise he couldn't make it as an actual practicing attorney.

4. I know that Autism Speaks has been asked to add Autism Hub to their resource list, with no response. I think the likes of Dr. Shih are not driving the bus.

Kirby said something like he didn't have to say anything. Montel did all of the attacking. Cool

Dr. Shih showed admirable composure and grace under pressure. He is a model of how that sort of 'conversation' should be handled.

I'm a little startled that Dr. Shih's participation in this conversation was from the audience rather than the stage but I suppose that that is Montel's show and stage and rules.

Handley, I'm on vacation and don't want to take the time to figure out who you're trying to out, but I'm surprised you took the time to check out this blog.

I neither care nor have the ability to do anything about my voice, but, with apologies to a former president, I'll say that in the morning I'll be happy with my voice whereas you will still be a man who performs dangerous and unproven experiments on children. I think I'll take the voice criticism.
